Juncker barks up the wrong tree, Ursula does better

Junckers' expressed wish to merge the Presidencies of Commission and Council has harmed him and has harmed the Commission. It was a slap in face of the sovereignty and pride of the European countries and so, inevitably, a few days after he uttered his wish, he got the opposite: an unpassable opposition and some contempt.
The President of the Council representing the individual countries does not always agree with what the President of the Commission wants to do. That is normal. Merging that voice with the President of the Commission would have silenced the Council representative, which would have been a mistake.
I always liked Juncker because, succeeding Barroso, a typical South European good looking nitwit, he immediately behaved like the Prime Minister of
Europe. The Union needed a man at the helm. But now, also nominating Selmayr as new General Secretary (what is this function?) Juncker seems to embark on an ego trip that will not fail to irritate the member countries and further harm the EU.
Ursula von der Leyen, the German Defense Minister, sees things more clearly than Juncker. About her, please read ‘The Achilles heel of the European Union’ on this blog.
