Trump on EU military spending
Acrimonious is what the press calls the June 2018 Trump letters to EU
leaders about our too little military spending. The otherwise excellent Brussels based EUobserver
for example says ‘far from projecting solidarity in the face
of threats from Russia, these letters highlight divisions within the alliance’.
I disagree here and I think Trump is absolutely right. When the White House
says “The United States continues to devote more resources to the defence of
Europe when the Continent’s economy, including Germany’s, are doing well and
security challenges abound. This is no longer sustainable for us.” …. This is, to me, entirely correct and simply asks us to bear a normal share of the
cost and of the work for our safety.
In fact, I am delighted that Trump criticises our ‘comfortable’ attitude at the cost of others. We Europeans need to wake up.
