In his State of the Union speech of September 12, Juncker, speaking
about trade, sweepingly mentioned Canada, Japan, Mexico, the countries
of South-Amerika, New Zealand and Australia. He did not mention China!
And he added “Europe is open to trade, yes. But there must be
reciprocity.” This was his diplomatic way to be negative about the
free trade with China that has made Beijing too rich too quickly in
the very short time of only 17 years. In other words, the EU is finally,
even as yet silently, aligning itself with President Trump in its
attitude towards trade with China. Better late than never.
