FCA and PSA, the legacy of Sergio Marchionne.
When in 2008 Chrysler was on the verge of collapse, Mr. Marchionne, in a daring move, made Fiat Automobiles a major shareholder of Chrysler. Then, running the resulting group, he approached Ford and General Motors, arguing that automakers should merge in order to make cars cheaper with a greater economy of size. The very expensive creation of a new platform for a next generation of cars should not be repeated by each of them separately but should be done together, he argued. He was refused. He died July last year, and it is only now that what he advocated is being done, FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles), PSA (Peugeot Société Anonyme) that already has Opel are now talking to merge. It will cost jobs, precisely those jobs that make these cars too expensive. So it is an excellent move. The PSA CEO Carlos Tavares is now one of the ambitious men that want Marchionne's plan to become reality.
