Both ridiculous, the US and China
Both ridiculous
The U.S. and China both made complete fools of themselves about a weather balloon, China the worse. When this quite large contraption sailed in from over Alaska, then Canada into US airspace, it was dubbed ‘spy balloon’ by the media, which is laughable. Just a weather balloon! State Antony Blinken then indefinitely postponed his trip to Beijing. Had the US just made fun of the Chinese, like Reagan would have done, they would have scored, now they were ridiculous. After a 48 hours frenzy, Joe Biden correctly ordered it shot down, to make sure it had no other instruments on board, and because it had violated US airspace. And the Chinese? Had its government ever wished to behave as good world citizens, they would immediately have sent an apology to Washington with specs of the balloon. But they said nothing until after the shoot down, then issued an aggressive message about the US violating some imaginary rights. How incredibly nonsensical! The real trouble here is that aggressive language like this makes it impossible to return to normal behavior without loss of face and therefore often finally will lead to military violence.
But on February 8, the Washington Post published:
"The U.S. intelligence community has linked the Chinese spy balloon to a vast surveillance program run by the People’s Liberation Army.
The surveillance balloon effort has collected information on military
assets in areas of strategic interest including Japan, India, Vietnam,
Taiwan and the Philippines."
That would make the above erroneous. I'll wait with my opinion till divers will have found the balloon's debris. And who is speaking for "the U.S. intelligence community"? A spreader of panick, or is it the Pentagon?
